Read moreDetailsA prolonged spell of intense rainfall has wreaked havoc across parts of Assam and Meghalaya, triggering flooding, landslides, displacement, and at least a dozen fatalities, as state and central agencies race against time to mount relief operations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall in the region, and recent days have borne out that forecast with severe consequences.
In Assam, district administrations report five deaths in the Kamrup Metropolitan area, including three women in the Bonda locality on Guwahati’s outskirts, caused by landslips and inundation of low-lying sectors. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) says over 10,150 people have been affected, with two relief camps and a food distribution centre already activated. In total, 17 districts in Assam are reported to be impacted by floods and landslides.

In Meghalaya, heavy rains have caused widespread damage to road networks, and at least six casualties have been confirmed in recent days. Reports also point to serious disruptions in connectivity, especially in hilly zones where landslides have washed away sections of highways linking Garo Hills to Assam. The NH-6 corridor at Kuliang in East Jaintia Hills was recently struck by a landslide, severing a key route to the Barak Valley region of Assam.
Rescue and relief efforts are underway involving multiple agencies. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Forces (SDRFs), police, fire services and local administration have mobilised teams to evacuate stranded people, distribute essentials, and restore access in cut-off areas. According to reports, more than 78,000 people in Assam have been affected, and over 1,200 individuals were sheltered in five designated relief camps. In some sectors, flight operations in Guwahati experienced disruptions due to intense winds and poor visibility.
The IMD has issued red alerts for districts in both states, warning of continued heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls. Authorities in Assam and Meghalaya have urged residents in low-lying and slope-vulnerable areas to shift to safer ground or relief shelters until conditions stabilise.
Looking at the historical context, the northeast monsoon season has repeatedly tested the region’s disaster responsiveness. In 2024, monsoon flooding affected millions in Assam and neighbouring states, with displacement reported across districts. Analysts note that changing weather patterns — possibly aggravated by climate change — are intensifying these rainfall extremes.
If the relief operations hold course, lives can be rescued and basic services restored in affected zones. However, the road ahead remains fraught: restoration of roads and bridges, rehabilitation of families, and long-term mitigation of landslide and flood risk will test administrative capacity. Public perception, especially among vulnerable rural and tribal communities, will hinge on how swiftly and equitably the response reaches them.
